Firmus surpasses 900 MW contracted capacity, adds OpenAI as anchor customer and expands into Malaysia

Sydney / 8 September 2026
Firmus and OpenAI today announced a multi-year strategic partnership under which OpenAI will contract dedicated AI compute capacity from two Firmus AI Factory sites in Malaysia.
Under the partnership, OpenAI will become an anchor customer of Firmus, supporting the deployment of additional AI Factory capacity across the Company’s AI Factory platform.
With the addition of this partnership, Firmus’ total contracted capacity across all customers now stands at more than 900 MW. The Company’s total contracted customer portfolio underpins the next phase of its growth across the region.
Firmus’ broader portfolio spans seven AI factories across four countries: Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Two sites are operational today, in Australia and Singapore, and five are under development, targeting ready-for-service over the next 24 months. The addition of Malaysia extends Firmus’ Asia-Pacific footprint beyond its existing presence in Australia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Australian engineering behind Asia-Pacific NVIDIA Vera Rubin rollout
Firmus will deploy NVIDIA Vera Rubin at scale across Asia-Pacific, bringing NVIDIA’s next-generation accelerated computing platform to the region. The partnership forms part of Firmus’ expansion of its AI factory platform across Asia-Pacific and its development of integrated AI factories spanning power, cooling, accelerated computing systems, networking, software and workload performance.
The AI factories developed under the partnership will use NVIDIA DSX AI Factory Platform to integrate NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale systems with Firmus’ HyperCube platform. The HyperCube integrates advanced liquid cooling, mechanical systems and electrification into a repeatable infrastructure system manufactured and prefabricated in regional New South Wales.
Bringing more of the AI factory value chain together is expected to improve deployment speed, capital efficiency and operating performance to support a lower cost of token production.
“This multi-year partnership marks the moment Asia-Pacific becomes a producer of intelligence, not just a consumer of it,” said Tim Rosenfield – Firmus Co-Founder and Co-CEO. Firmus has spent seven years building for this - a footprint that runs from Southeast Asia to Australia, and the manufacturing, technology and teams to bring it online at speed.”
“We’re excited to work with Firmus as we expand our global compute capacity. These new data centers in Malaysia will help us serve growing demand for OpenAI’s products across the region and around the world. We look forward to bringing this capacity online together,” said Sachin Katti, VP of Compute Strategy at OpenAI.
“AI infrastructure demand is accelerating across Asia-Pacific, and meeting it requires full-stack AI factories engineered for performance, durability, efficiency, scale and fungible workloads,” said Nico Caprez, vice president of Global AI Infrastructure Growth at NVIDIA. “Built with NVIDIA DSX and powered by NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, Firmus’ HyperCube-based AI factories will help bring advanced capacity online faster and produce intelligence at industrial scale with stronger token economics across the region.”
Expanding practical access to AI in Australia
Alongside the partnership with OpenAI, Firmus also intends to establish an Australian AI Access Program to support eligible researchers and organisations applying AI to areas of national and regional importance. The proposed program is expected to focus on applications in science, education, agriculture, energy and resource efficiency, and climate resilience.
